I’ll say it: working from home sucks. Am I the only one that feels this way? And as an educator, it’s just not the same job without seeing the kids face-to-face! Even so, here are 10 tips for working from home that have helped me already this school year.

1. Get dressed.

I know how tempting it is to stay in PJs all day, but you have to get dressed. If you want to have a productive day, you have to look and feel productive. So, get up, do your hair, and put on a nice outfit, even if it is a dress shirt with sweats. Hey, I’m not judging! They can’t see pants via Zoom!

2. Have a separate work space.

Don’t work in your bed. Don’t work in your bed. Don’t work in your bed. Even in a smaller home, you have to find a separate place to work. I just put a chair in my living room because I don’t have space for an office, and that’s fine! Working from the bed or the couch is just a big no no. The mind cannot make those adjustments! You’ll either be sleepy at your computer or awake at night. So, in order to be productive working from home, create a separate work space.

3. Organize your area.

Organization is key. It’s hard not having a classroom, office, or even desk, but you still have to stay organized. I feel like I have to go back to my college days of getting a planner and using colors because it is much harder at home! Pinterest is my favorite place for organization hacks and tips. There’s something for everyone!

4. Limit distractions.

Babies, dogs, kids, husbands, etc. are lovely, but they are distractions. When working from home, distractions are the worst! I can’t even sit facing the window! There’s nothing worse than being called on in a Zoom meeting, and you have no idea what was even happening because you were distracted. So, work in a quiet room by yourself, and you should be okay.

5. Have back and neck support.

The first week I worked from home, my back was in SO MUCH pain! And it was all because I’m not used to sitting all day (especially in an uncomfortable chair). I ended up having to find a chair with back support and get a pillow. It can really be that simple and inexpensive! You just have to make sure your back is straight and supportive. It will definitely save you in the long run.

6. Invest in blue light glasses or a blue light filter.

Luckily, my prescription glasses have a blue light filter, but if they didn’t, I’d definitely invest in a pair! Looking at a screen all day can lead to headaches and migraines, especially if you’re someone that is sensitive to brightness. Amazon is a great place to find blue light glasses for cheap, and both Warby Parker and Zenni Optical have cute prescription styles!

7. Stretch and take breaks.

I can’t stress this one enough! Sitting for long periods of time is so bad for both mental and physical health. I always take breaks and stretch multiple times a day because my back and my legs just can’t take it. Yoga with Adriene on YouTube has a great 15-minute stretch video that can be done at the beginning, middle, or end of the work day. During these times, we have to take care of our bodies, and breaks are just as important as moving.

8. Eat healthy snacks.

Something about sitting at my laptop makes me hungry! So when I’m working from home, I have to have healthy snacks around. Some good ones are fruit, protein shakes, nuts/trail mix, protein bars, or even half of a bagel with peanut butter. Not only are these snacks healthy, but they are also energizing. And since you have access to all of your kitchen, it may be a good idea to pack up your snacks and keep them near you. If you’re anything like me, you could go wandering into the kitchen and come out with chips instead of the trail mix, so I definitely suggest packing the snacks ahead of time.

9. Stay hydrated.

I’m pretty sure this tip is self-explanatory. Drink water during the day. Any time you feel thirsty or any time you think about water, take a drink. Water keeps you hydrated, energetic, and helps prevent headaches, so drink up!

10. Stop working at the end of your shift.

Now that I am working from home, I see how easy it is to become a workaholic! I have to hold myself to the commitment of not working after my shift is over. Since my home is my office, and email is in the palm of my hand, it takes a lot of effort to set these boundaries. However, I’ve finally done it! All you have to do is commit. That’s the hardest part.

Well, that’s it! These are my 10 tips for working from home. What have you learned over the months of this new normal? Leave your tips for me in the comments!
